I recall the first time I loaded up GTA4 on 360 and I was impressed. The city is so immersive. Even if you don't like the game you HAVE to admit that it was fun to drive around Liberty City if only to experience the world and learn a bit about 'The Big Apple' and its geography. The sights and sounds of New York as expressed through its GTA persona are certainly one of the pinnacles of this console generation.
...and then I saw this video which demonstrates the PC version of GTA4 running a graphics mod called ICEnhancer and by GOD how ignorant us console junkies must be. Check out both videos on the page and be sure to crank the rez up to HD and you will see something truly spectacular. The second video is the most impressive showing a bit of driving around the city. Fair enough, the frames might be a bit shaky but that aside, the footage is demonstrating damn-near playable gaming that is certainly approaching (if not matching) ray-traced-level graphics detail.
While some might argue that only top-of-the-line rigs might have a chance at running this, lets agree that we console guys would be happy with something halfway between what we've got now and what is shown in the video. However, that is not the point; what is needed is a new generation of console to take advantage of what has obviously made the PS3 and 360 look like proverbial dinosaurs.
I still read many comments about how everyone wants the PS3 to last for ever (360 fans seem to be silent these days) and I can understand that people hate change. My answer to those who cry to stave of the next gen is this: turn off your PS3 and force yourself to play the Wii exclusively for an entire month. If the thought of that is unpalatable because the graphic quality is so poor then congratulations! - Now you know how I feel about you.

I can see your point but i can also see it as the reason why there shouldn't be a rush to get the next gen of consoles out! 2012/2013 would be fine. the PC gaming market has just started to show how much of a push up in graphics there is now, look at BF3 that twat has finally made me upgrade from an 8800 (which i thought was a brick to an even bigger brick) 580. and if i wanted to run the unreal tec demo cant remember the name (dude smoking fag turns to metal kicks crap out of shit demo) i would have to go and purchase another 580 to run it.
ReplyDeleteI know that all this power is not required for the console market but i think what i'm trying to say is cos i cant word shit as good as you can is there is no rush as we all know consoles have to be made to a price so why not wait just that little while longer about a year so that the NM process has time to shrink more thereby becoming cheaper and the big one less heat being produced i'm gonna put my money on something like a ati 6700/6800 or the nvidia equivalent in the next gen of consoles as there getting cheaper and smaller all the time so your getting more PPW compared to the bigger newer cards that are coming out.
I think the big problem for me is that consoles are SO far behind now I'm actually finding it difficult to look at the games coming (seriously). Not to mention that both Sony and Microsoft outright lied to us about actually enjoying 1080p native gaming, which is largely a myth.
ReplyDeleteI am still impressed with some of the newer PS3 titles but they are few and far between. On average, we are simply not seeing anything within the league of PC gaming of the last 3-4 years let alone today.
